In the wake of four advertisement professionals’ death in an accident last week, activist and Nav Bharat Democratic Party candidate for the Pune Lok Sabha Constituency, Vinita Deshmukh, has decided to file a public interest litigation (PIL) against the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and its contractors for bad shape of highways in the state and the resultant increase in the number of road accidents.

The four ad professional worked with a Kothrud-based firm Paradigm Plus Marketing and Advertisement. All four died last week after their car plunged into a gap between two bridges on Neera River.

A citizens’ meeting was called at Sarasbaug on Sunday afternoon by Deshmukh in order to chalk out an action plan against the irresponsible and negligent attitude of NHAI officials and road contractors.

According to Deshmukh, the four people lost their lives because of a misleading sign board on the highway and non availability of safety measures on highways.

“We are going to write to chief minister Ashok Chavan and will seed suspension of officials from NHAI and also stringent action against contractors who have been given the responsibility of NH 4 (the Pune-Bengaluru Highway),” Deshmukh said.

She further stated that they will also demand compensation to the family members of all four deceased, who were victims of bad condition of the bridge and the erroneous signage put up at the opening of the bridge.

RTI activist Vijay Kumbhar said that they will also file an PIL against the increasing road accidents on highways due to the bad shape of the roads and the laid back attitude of NHAI officials.

“Before filing the PIL, we will first take the details of accidents in the state which caused by the poor road conditions of Highways and on that basis, the PIL will be filed,” he said.

Deshmukh demanded that the company who has been given contract of particular stretch should be black listed in the state.
