To protest against the attack on veteran CPI leader Govind Pansare and his wife Uma, various groups like National Alliance of People's Movement, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Bharat Mukti Morcha, assembled at Council Hall in Pune Cantonement area on Monday.

Raising slogans like ‘We are all Pansare’, the protesters condemned the incident, in which the leader and his wife were shot at in Sagarmala, Kolhapur, this morning when the couple was going on for a usual walk. The groups protested against the Narendra Modi and Devendra Fadnavis-led government, accusing them of failing to maintain the country’s democratic status.

Talking to iamin, Subhash Ware of Aam Admi Party said that the attack on Pansare is an attack on the right to freedom and right to speech. Bearing an uncanny similarity to the murder of Dabholkar, who was shot near Omkareshwar Bridge, on the morning of August 20, 2013, Pansare and his wife were shot by two unidentified assailants on a bike, when they were out for a morning walk.

Ramesh Awasthi, leader of Maharashtra Peoples Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL), said that this attack will not curb the communist movements and they want the government to take necessary steps to find the culprits and punish them so that another Dabholkar or Pansare is not attacked. Other activists alleged that this attack is not on some individual but an attack on progressive thoughts as well.

The protestors will assemble once again on the occasion of Shivaji Jayanti on February 19, to rally against the intolerance of various political parties trying to suppress the voices of social activists.
