When residents of Vishrantwadi, Ravi Prasad and his wife Rashmi, left for their relative’s house in Shivajinagar on Tuesday morning along with their two sons, they never knew that a deadly experience is awaiting them.

A private bus of Sheetal Travels (MH30/AA-5325), which went on a rampage after a brake failure at 9.15 am, dashed against four vehicles on old Mumbai-Pune highway near the Sangamwadi Bridge junction. The Prasad family was plying on one of the those vehicles.

Though no casualty was reported, the people plying on the vehicles suffered injuries due to the mishap. Thankfully, Prasad’s two children, one 5-year-old and one 10-month-old, escaped unharmed.

Rashmi suffered a fracture on her left leg, while her husband has suffered multiple injuries. Both are recuperating at Ruby Hall Clinic.

Besides them, three people reportedly suffered injuries.

While one, identified as Rohini Jatkar (40), has been admitted to Sancheti hospital with multiple fractures, the other two victims, were given first aid at a nearby private clinic.

The bus driver, Ganesh Nikam (29) from Akola, has been arrested by the Shivajinagar police. A case of rash driving and negligence has been registered against him.

The Akola-Bhosari bus which had 40 passengers on board was entering the old Mumbai-Pune highway when its brakes failed.

“Ganesh was about to take a right turn at the junction when he realised that the brakes of his bus failed. He suddenly swirled towards left and dashed four two-wheelers which were waiting at the signal to take a left turn,” said the police. PSI Mohan Kulkarni of Mariaai police chowki said, “The driver is in our custody and will be produced in the court. We have recorded the statements of the victims.”

The bus rammed into our scooter and we fell down. I saw the bus moving towards my son Anand and daughter Anjali. Somehow, I leaped and picked them up in time. The bus passed over me — Ravi Prasad.

It was a nightmare. I was lying on the road beside my husband. We are alive as we were luckily between the wheels of the bus. All the time I was concerned for my children. I am happy that my children are safe and sound — Rashmi Prasad.
