Prisoner dies enroute to the hospital in Pune, authorities say he was being treated for weakness

Pune: An under trial prisoner who was unwell and remanded to magisterial custody imprisoned at Yerawada Central Jail died while being shifted to Sassoon General Hospital on Friday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Inayat Sharif Shaikh ( 24), a resident of Patryachi Chawl in New Nana Peth.

Yerawada Police Station in-charge S A Patil said that Shaikh had been arrested Bibvewadi police station in connection with an abduction case involving a caterer. He was lodged into the jail on June 10. Shaikh's health started deteriorating suddenly on Thursday, after which he was admitted to the jail hospital for treatment. Doctors at the hospital were treating him for weakness, he added.
However, his condition went from bad to worse on Friday morning. A police escort from the headquarters was summoned and he was rushed to Sassoon Hospital as it was case of emergency. Shaikh died on way to the hospital and the doctors declared him dead on arrival, Patil added.

Yerawada Jail Superintendent Yogesh Desai said that Shaikh had been admitted for weakness related ailment and was undergoing a treatment at the jail hospital. " His condition worsened and taking the gravity of the situation into consideration, we rushed him to Sassoon Hospital but he died on way, " he added. Desai , however, ruled out that the allegations that Shaikh was beaten by the jail guards during a scuffle.

Meanwhile, the Yerwada Police have filed a case in relation to the incident. The body was handed over to the relatives after a postmortem was performed at the hospital.
