One of the brains behind the success of Muktangan de-addiction centre in Pune and well-known writer, Dr Anil Awachat, has been selected for a national award for his contribution to the field by the Union ministry for social justice and empowerment.

The award would be presented to Awachat at a function in New Delhi to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26. President Pranab Miukherjee would present the award.

Deputy director of Muktangan and Awachat’s daughter Mukta Puntambekar said the award for her father was a honour for the entire Muktangan family.
Awachat participated in the campaign against the drug abuse along with his wife Dr Anita Awachat. After her death, he became director of Muktangan de-addiction centre. His book, ‘Gard’ is based on the first-hand experience of patients admitted for de-addiction at the centre.

Muktangan, under the able leadership of Awachat, started a training and research centre at the western India level. It has a separate de-addiction wing for women.

Awachat wrote the story of Muktangan in his book, `Muktanganchi Goshta’ two years ago. He has delivered public lectures and talks on All India Radio for creating awareness about de-addiction.
