Pune: Expressing the need to match global standards in the field of higher education, President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday said that higher education should be driven by new thinking and innovation rather than being rendered on the turf of vintage knowledge.

He was addressing at the third convocation of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune. Maharashtra Governor S Sankaranarayanan, Union Minister for HRD Smriti Irani, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, the IISER Board of Governors Chairperson T V Ramkrishnan and IISER Director K N Ganesh were present on the dais. President Mukherjee felicitated Akash G with the Institute’s Gold Medal for academic excellence.
Underlining that our higher educational institutions don’t match global standards as brought out by international surveys , Mukherjee pointed out that our IITs don’t figure in first top 200 Universities of the World. He said that greater internationalization and collaboration with top global institutions along with hiring foreign faculty and drawing students from abroad should receive increased focus in our institutions. He said that our institutions should identify and initiate new and frontier research in multi-disciplinary areas like energy, environment and health. He expressed the need for institutions to have productive associations with industry through internships and research projects.
Union HRD Minister Irani asked the IISER to attract students from Government colleges and schools towards science by inculcating drive of science in them. She said that the per centage of women or girl students in IISER was only 30 per cent and expressed the need for increasing it. She said that IISER Pune has commendable record of 87 per cent placement in a matter of eight years. Chavan said that the young graduates of IISER should keep the Indian reality of hunger, poverty, illiteracy and diseases at heart while propelling India for innovation led India. Ganesh assured the President and the country that IISER would make the country proud through its contribution.
