For the first time in Pune, a mime play competition would be held to encourage on acting without words and open yet another window for the theatre lovers in the city.
`Maunaantar’ which will be held on July 5 and 6 at Bharat Natya Mandir, is organised by `Dreams 2 Reality (D2R)’ and `Fairytale Media’.
Founder of D2R, Kushal Khot said that Pune has a rich tradition of theatre, including a heritage of Purushottam Karandak, a one act play competition which has been running for last 50 years.
He also pointed out that Firodiya Karandak competition provides a platform for presenting almost all the art forms through a script for the college students.
According to Khot, mime play competition would provide a platform for those who would like to present plays without any use of words.
“It would provide an opportunity for the intense actors, actresses and even composers, since music plays an important role in Mime plays,”explains Khot.
Apart from the several theatre groups in the colleges in the city, there are separate groups formed by young play enthusiasts to present their talent.
Such groups perform at theatres opened mainly for amateur artistes who ultimately take up theatre or films as career.
Khot said that Maunaantar would be a challenge for the young, creative minds who would have to write, direct or present their plays, placing actions in place of dialogue. He said that the genre can provide different ideas for scripts, sets, lights and make up in the presentation.
The competition is open for not just colleges but also for independent groups. Renowned artists from the theatre fraternity and Marathi film industry would be the judges for the event.
The winners and runners-ups would be given cash prizes along with trophies (Karandak).
