Taking serious note of increasing prank and blank calls, the top brass police officers of Pune police have decided to block the SIM cards of such numbers which are frequently making calls to Pune police control. The decision has been taken as the control room is getting more such calls in a day.

The officers also claimed that they are going to direct telecom companies to block such SIM cards. The police have also said that there are couple of callers who have made more than 50 prank calls to the control room just only to make fun.

Accordingly, the control room has prepared a special report in this regard and will send to nodal offices of these companies in next couple of days. In the report, the police have recommended to block 30 such numbers which have been making prank or blank calls to the control room for last couple of weeks. Since the past few days, the control room has been flooded with such calls.

Deputy commissioner of police (special branch) MS Tambade said that the police control room receives over 1,000 calls daily. "Almost 90 per cent of the calls are either blank calls or a prank," Tambde informed.

According to a police official, the police staff on duty at control room is always under lot of stress as it has to handle a large volume of calls. "It's really frustrating for them to receive such calls while on duty," he said, adding that the police has started keeping a record of mobiles numbers from which meaningless calls are made. The police will be handing over these numbers to the service providers asking them to block their SIM cards.

He said that with the use of latest technology, any number can be traced with the name and address of the person making the call due to which it is difficult to get away from the clutches of cops. He also pointed out that some automated calls from mobile companies are also being received by the control room. "We have warned the mobile companies to stop such calls as soon as possible," Tambde added.

The toll free '100' phone number has been established for people to inform the police of any untoward incidents in the city. According to the control record, notices had been sent to over 200 people last year and about 70 people had been summoned to the commissioner's office to warn them for making prank calls. "These calls are wasting the time of the police and also affecting the working of the control room." Tambde.
