As a fallout of the murder of anti-superstition activist Dr Narendra Dabholkar, the Pune police have revised the security of 12 key persons in Pune, including businessmen Cyrus Poonawala, Manikchand Dhariwal and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi.
Speaking to dna, deputy commissioner of police (Special Branch) MS Tambade said, “In the revised the security, we have provided gunmen in day and night shifts to these 12 important persons.”
Explaining how the police department decides that a person must get police protection, Tambade said, “When one applies for personal security, we ask the concerned police station inspector and zonal deputy commissioner to check out the life threat to the person in question. We then provide security to him or her.”
As per the record of the special branch of Pune police, they have provided security to 12 persons, including businessmen Cyrus Poonawala, Manikchand Dhariwal, Pimpri Chicnhwad municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi, Milind Ekbote, Adar Poonawala, two renowned city-based traders and a few activists.
“Under the plan to revise the security of these 12 persons, we have decided to switch guards and change their duty timings,” senior police inspector Venkat Gangalwad, who is incharge of the security branch, told dna.
Excepts a few politicians, the Pune police has given security to all MLAs and MPs in the city. Senior police inspector (Political wing ) BD Gade of special branch told dna, “We have provided security to almost all MLAs and MP from the city. If a politician seeks security, then we will give him.”
