The security audit of Pune police commissionerate carried out by the special branch recently has raised serious concerns about the security of Shivajinagar police headquarters. The report states that the headquarters, which houses armoury, has inadequate security.

After LeT terrorist and 26/11 attacks accused Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab was hanged in Yerawada Central Jail, the city police had received inputs from Central agencies about Pune being on the terror radar. Hence, the police administration decided to conduct a fresh security audit of vital installations, including its headquarters.

The audit report shows that the security at police headquarters is compromised mainly due to inadequate number of guards to man all entries and exits, absence of proper compound wall and lack of CCTV camera coverage. On the other hand, elaborate security measures have been put in place at the police commissionerate building that houses the offices of top officials.

Following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and German Bakery blast in February 2010, the state home department had sanctioned new weapons for the city police. The new weaponry approved for the Pune police included 85 AK-47 assault rifles, about 250 SLRs, 450 carbines, and a large stock of pistols. The home department also provided four more AK-47s, 270 more pistols, 950 more carbines and some SLRs.

Of the three entries that lead you to the police headquarters, only one of the gates, the one on Pune University Road, is protected by a lone sentry. The other gates are not manned at all. The compound wall around the headquarters is low and does not have barbed wire fencing.

Speaking to DNA, a senior police officer, who did not want to divulge his identity, said, “It is a serious issue. The police headquarters should have adequate personnel for security, CCTV camera coverage, compound wall fencing and firefighting system. This becomes all the more essential in Pune after the past two terrorist attacks.”

Speaking to DNA, deputy commissioner of police (headquarters) Shrish Sardeshpande said, “We have already sent a fresh design of compound wall to the PWD and work on it will start soon. Gates would be installed at all entries and more policemen would be deployed to man it.” He claimed that an officer of deputy commissioner of police (DCP) rank monitors the security at the headquarters at night.
