Pune commissioner of police Gulabrao Pol has claimed that three persons, who were picked up from Goa and Mumbai in connection with the murder of anti-superstition crusader Dr Narendra Dabholkar, have not played any role in the case.

The duo identified as Mangesh Harbhan Singh Chaudhary, 30, a Nallasopara resident and Mumtaz alias Munnabhai Rasool Ansari, 43, a Jogeshwari resident were found hiding at a feast venue at Old Goa near Panaji and detained on December 3.

Speaking to the media on Monday Pol said, “We have given a clean chit to the three persons who were picked from Goa and Mumbai. They have no roles in the murder. Nothing incriminating has been found against the two and they are not connected with Dr Dabholkar’s murder. They had informed about another person who too was quizzed and let off."

The operation to track down the suspects, considered as sharp shooters hailing from Mumbai, was jointly conducted by Pune and Goa police. The detention was made at a village housing cluster of churches, where the annual feast of St Francis Xavier is going on. The duo was picked up from a stall.

Another murder suspect’s custody extended

The inquiry of criminal Ramvilas Nagori alias Manya (24) is in progress, Pol said. The Judicial Magistrate (First Class) KM Pingle has extended the police custody of Nagori and three others arrested in the Prahlad Jogdandkar murder case by two days. Assistant Public Prosecutor Milind Datrange argued, “The offence is of serious nature and the suspects are not revealing important information about the motive behind the crime. These suspects need to be interrogated in police custody to find out other names of other criminals whom they have sold the firearms.” Defence lawyer Biju Aloor pleaded for judicial custody claiming that police is not investigating Jogdhankar murder case and they are probing Nagori’s link in Dabholkar’s murder case.
