The Centre has approved the proposal of 500 buses for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad through Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Pune would get 365 buses while Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) would get 135.
Talking to the media on Thursday, Pune municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak said that the JNNURM panel discussed the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) proposal on Wednesday and approved it on Thursday. However, it is unclear when these buses would be made available.
Pathak said that in addition to CNG buses the PMPML proposal also included minibuses running on diesel.
Earlier, PMPML had received approval for its proposal to purchase 650 buses from the Centre through JNNURM.
PMPML had purchased only 350 buses which resulted in bus commuters facing inconvenience and the utility receiving flak. Around two hundred buses have gone off roads for want of repairs, thereby severely affecting the service.
It is learnt that PMPML had sent a proposal for 1,6oo buses to the Union Government through JNNURM but it was not sanctioned.
