In a freak accident on the busy Tilak Road, students and other commuters waiting for the daily ride at a PMPML bus stop were saved by a few inches as the entire bus stop came crashing down all of a sudden. Thanks to the quick thinking of a polytechnic student, many school students who were waiting for the bus were saved from any major injury. The incident took place around 11.30 am near Hirabaug Chowk at Tilak Road.

The 17-year-old student Chaitanya Gaikwad, a resident of Shukruwar Peth, was the first to inform the local police about the incident.

Recalling the incident, Gaikwad said that the frame of the bus stop was already rusted and a tempo while taking a turn dashed the bus stop on one side, unhinging it.

“This bus stand was in rusted condition and has been somehow hanging on for a while. On Tuesday, around 11.30 am, I was chatting with my friend at the bus stop. Nearly ten schoolchildren were inside the bus stop when a passing tempo taking a turn slightly dashed it. I could hear some noise and sensed something would go wrong and asked the children to pull out of the bus stand.

But one of the schoolkids was left behind when the bus stand came crashing down,” added Gaikwad, a first year diploma in instrument student (AISSMS) All India Shri Shivaji Memorial Society College of Polytechnic.

Luckily the school student had held his bag over his head, so he didn’t get any injury. “We gave him water and later he went home along with his friend in the bus. Meanwhile, the traffic movement stopped for a few minutes. The Pune Municipal Corporation staffers came and cleared the road.”

Ram Pathare, inspector in-charge of Swargate police station said, “There is no case registered with us. Only an entry of the incident in our record.”

When dna tried to contact PMPML joint managing director Pravin Asthikar, he did not receive calls while PMPML traffic manager Sunil Gawali and chief engineer Sunil Burse said that the incident was not their department’s concern.
