Mohannagar residents on Thursday strongly protested against demolition of illegal structures by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). However, municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi continued his firm stand against illegal constructions and the civic body went on razing illegal buildings.

The protesters blocked the commissioner’s vehicle and demanded that the action be stopped immediately. However, Pardeshi explained to them that the illegal structures should be razed as they cause water-logging during the monsoon.

After demolishing the illegal commercial structures and the structures falling within the floodlines, the PCMC administration has started taking action against illegal structures falling in the residential zone from Thursday. When the civic staff arrived to demolish the structures at Shiv Darshan Colony of Mohannagar in Chinchwad, the local residents opposed the action strongly and the drama continued for almost an hour.

The demolition drive continued afterwards and the residents took out a protest march to the PCMC headquarters. However, the security guards did not allow the protesters to enter the building. Finally, a group of eight people was allowed to meet the commissioner.

Pardeshi clarified that the four illegal buildings that the protesters were agitating about were situated near the nala and would cause water-logging in the neighbouring houses, so they should be demolished.

Later, when Pardeshi was leaving office for the day, angry protesters blocked his car.

The Pimpri police were called in and they brought the situation under control by detaining some protesters. Later, all the protesters were released.

Two structures demolished
The PCMC demolished one illegal structure of 1,400 sq ft and another of 14,000 sq ft at Rahatani. The demolition drive took place under heavy police security. So far, PCMC has demolished 252 illegal structures.
