A good 82 years after Rajguru was hanged, the department of posts released a commemorative stamp as a philatelic tribute to him.

The commemorative stamp, the demand for which was pending with the Centre since 2007, was released on Friday  in New Delhi.  President Pranab Mukherjee, union minister of agriculture Sharad Pawar and Shirur MP Shivaji Adhalrao Patil were present. Mukherjee  said, “Rajguru will always be remembered in the annals of Indian history for his valour and for dedicating his life towards India’s independence.”

The demand to issue the stamp was voiced in Lok Sabha by Adhalrao Patil in 2006-07.  Patil said, “I discussed the issue with all politicians and MPs from Maharashtra in 2007 and submitted a memorandum to the philatelic department.

At that time, the department was being handled by the then minister A Raja. He scrutinised the proposal and informed that it can’t proceed.” He informed, “That prompted me to file an RTI application and get information about the norms.

Later, I raised the issue in Lok Sabha after which many leaders from Maharashtra came to me and supported my cause. Then, I submitted a new proposal to the department.” Patil then met MP Sachin Pilot, who went through the proposal and issued instructions to the concerned department.

He said, “The state government has shown lackadaisical attitude towards restoring the wada. They should have completed the work long ago.” The MP, who  contributed money from his fund for the work of restoring the wada,  had reserved tickets of 400 people, who went to Delhi from Rajgurunagar to attend the stamp release function.
