Sudhir Parmar, a Std V student was all smiles when he came out of the Nagarwala School on Sunday afternoon as he had just adopted a stray puppy and was taking it home. He had put a red ribbon around the puppy’s neck and named his new friend Bruno.

Every day people see stray dogs wandering around on the streets in the neighborhood.

Fortunately, there are good-hearted people who choose to adopt them.

Ramona Collino, a volunteer said, “By adopting a stray dog, you also help reduce the number of strays on our streets. By adopting a stray dog and having it spayed or neutered, you reduce the number of dogs that will eventually end up as strays.”

Stray dogs are the biggest threat to pedestrians and motorcyclists. Today Pune has 40,000 stray dogs and there are 35 cases of dog bites daily.

Initiative like these will help reduce the number of strays on the road, which makes the roads safe at night for citizens. The number of stray dogs has gone down by 200 - the number of pups adopted at this camp so far.

Collino said, “Our volunteers foster small pups they pick up from the road. They feed them and get their vaccination and sterilisation done. Once these pups are above 2.5 months old, we put them in the adoption camp.”
