The Pimpri Chinchwad New Town Development Authority (PCNTDA) was able to acquire 18 acres of its land without carrying out any demolition drive, thanks to the initiative taken by local residents. The PCNTDA was trying to get hold of the land estimated to be worth around Rs 150 crore as per the market value for the past 41 years.

Illegal commercial structures had come up on the land at survey no. 24 in sector nos. 1 and 2. The PCNTDA had issued notices to these structures on several occasions but could not remove them.

Finally, the local farmers Bajirao Lande, Hiraman Landi, Nandkumbar Lande, Anil Lande, Ramesh Lande, Bhausaheb Lande, Shankar Lande and Patilbua Lande, who were the original owners of the land, intervened and asked the shopkeepers to remove the encroachments.

According to a press release issued by the PCNTDA, a school is also located on the land. The school authorities have shown willingness to shift the school elsewhere.

The PCNTDA was able to save lakhs of rupees as no demolition drive was carried out to vacate the land. Besides, the drive would have needed police security, machineries and labourers.
The PCNTDA was formed in March 1972 to provide affordable housing to industrial workers of Pimpri-Chinchwad city. Areas in Bhosari, Moshi, Chikhli, Nigdi, Chinchwad, Wakad, Akurdi and other villages fall under the PCNTDA limits.

Delay in land acquisition by the authority led to farmers selling small pieces of land to industrial workers who proceeded to construct unauthorised structures on the land.

The PCNTDA has intensified the demolition drive since December 2011 and also served notices on the structure owners asking them to remove unauthorised constructions on their own.
