What would be a loss for Pune would be a gain for Baramati if the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) does not undertake the construction of a memorial of Maharashtra’s most popular multi-faceted writer and lyricist of Geet Ramayan Ga Di Madgulkar.

Family members of the legendary lyricist and writer have revealed that NCP chief and Union Minister Sharad Pawar has shown willingness to build a memorial in Baramati if PMC does not do it. Gadima Pratishthan, the foundation in the memory of legendary lyricist is organising Gadima awards distribution every year on December 14, the death anniversary of Gadima.

Ga Di Madgulkar has penned stories for more than 165 Marathi movies, more than 2000 film songs and composed the unparalleled Geet Ramatan. Besides, he wrote 34 books, including novels, collection of short stories and musicals. The foundation would give away Gadima Award to veteran actor Shrikant Moghe on December 14 to mark the 36th death anniversary of the legend.

Gadima Pratishthan’s executive trustee Anand Madgulkar, and trustee Sridhar Madgulkar have demanded that PMC should undertake building of a befitting memorial for Gadima. Sridhar said that the project was getting delayed since almost ten years and political leaders, including the late Vilasrao Deshmukh and others had shown keen interest in the same.

Madgulkar revealed that since Sharad Pawar had named the 2500-capacity auditorium at Baramti after Gadima, and now has shown willingness to build a memorial too. Madgulkar said that when they approached Pawar regarding this memorial in Pune, Pawar asked them, “Hasn’t it been built yet?” and showed willingness to build it in Baramati if PMC does not take up the project.
