Patients stuck in Sassoon hospital lift, staff oblivious say fire department

Fire department officials said they received a call from police control room where one of the persons stuck in lift had called for help. The fire personnel in charge Vijay Bhilare confirmed to dna that four persons Vaishali Madan Shinde, Vikas Tukaram Tamble, Preeti Madan Shinde and Lilavati Tukaram Shinde were trapped inside a life of ward number 37 of the hospital. “When we reached people inside the lift were extremely nervous but surprisingly none of the staff on duty knew about the lift malfunctioning. We had reached within 15 minutes," said fire officer Vijay Bhilare.

All the four people trapped have been safely rescued.“Ward number 37 is in the older building and the lift was generally problematic, it is presently being being serviced and in most probability be replaced,” said another staff member of Sassoon Hospital.

Medical superintendent D G Kulkarni claimed that it took ten minutes to restore order. "The staff was aware about it."

Earlier in the year, there had been two incidents of lift malfunctioning at civic-run Kamala Nehru hospital in which five people were injured too following which Pune Municipal Corporation's health department shut down all lifts till a safety audit was conducted.
