Lack of homework by the Pune Regional Transport Officers resulted into failure of the RTO’s massive drive against school transport buses for not abiding by the school safety norms.

A special drive was held on Thursday by inspector of motor vehicles (IMV) Salim Munshi of Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), along with the Pune city traffic police. The drive was held on Jungli Maharaj Road and Fergusson College Road from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. However, they could catch hold of only two erring school transport vehicles. The officials, who were apparently unprepared to conduct the drive, stood on the streets without having anything to do for almost the entire three hours. They had little idea on which routes the school transport vehicles were plying. They even seemed to have no idea about the school timings.

“We have given memos to two school transport buses as they were not abiding by the school transport norms. The bus owners will have to report within seven days at Pune RTO. The names of bus owners who fail to report will be put in the defaulters’ list. When they come for a renewal of their permit, they will be made to fulfill the requirements before renewing their permit.”

Deputy regional transport officer Anil Valiv said, “There was a lack of coordination between the city traffic police department and RTO flying squad inspectors, due to which the drive on day one could not be successful. We will intensify the drive from Friday and ensure that we have better coordination. I have given clear instructions to the Inspector of Motor Vehicles (IMV) team.”

During the drive on Thursday the IMV also caught nine cars with tinted glasses, drivers without seat belts and those on phones while driving. “There should not be any films on the side glasses and the front windshields should have 70 per cent visibility and the rear windshields should have 45 per cent visibility. We have issued memos to nine vehicles on Thursday and owners of all the vehicles will have to come to Pune RTO within seven days to get them checked again,” Munshi informed.
