After an interim order was passed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the green court has now put severe restrictions on live bands or DJ music and other noisy celebrations at weddings.

Speaking with iamin, Asim Sarode, activist and lawyer said, “According to the order, marriage processions on roads should not use loud music systems due to the noise pollution and disturbance they cause. In Pune, especially in the cluttered areas, there are lawns and marriage halls in series which cause annoyance to residents there,"

The order was issued after an Environmental Interest Litigation (EIL) was filed by Sujal Sahakari Griharachna Sanstha. While the interim order is passed for marriage ceremonies only, further hearings on processions during festivals and anniversaries have been scheduled for next month.

Vivek Ghanekar, chairman, Sujal Sahakari Griharachna Sanstha, talking with iamin said that that the noise generated in marriage processions impelled them to file an EIL., “There is a marriage lawn in front of our society which was the reason behind generating loud music. The noise of crackers annoyed us all. Even after several requests made to the lawn owner, complaints to police and PMC, nothing was being done. Finally, we filed an EIL with the NGT and hope that the police take necessary actions against violators.”

Citizens have also cheered the green court for its interim order. “I live near a marriage lawn on Katraj highway. This route is already congested due to traffic and when there is any marriage procession going on, there is additional noise and chaos on the road. I am very happy with the decision,” said Ajinkya Kulkarni, 26, student.
