The dead body of a newborn baby boy was found floating in a canal near Dias Plot slums in Swargate on Saturday. The incident came to light when sub-inspector Priyanka Shelke lodged a complaint at Swargate police station against unidentified person under the Indian Penal Code.

Ram Pathare, inspector incharge of Swargate police station, said, “We had received a call that a baby’s body has been floating in the canal. Our staff reached there along with the fire brigade and we fished it out. He had suffered injuries on his head and had already died. We suspect that the child might be born out of an illicit relationship and was thrown in the water canal when he was alive. The post-mortem report states that the child died due to drowning.”

The inspector added, “We appeal to such couples that if they are not ready to take care of such children please hand them over to an orphanage or keep them near police stations.”
