Keeping her fingers in many pies has proved fruitful for 23-year-old Dr Shraddha Lande. She won the Bhosari by-election on Sunday.

A dentist, Lande contested on NCP ticket. She is the daughter of former Shiv Sena city president Bajirao Lande and is engaged to Ravi Landge, nephew of the late BJP city chief’s Ankush Landge. The bypolls were held for Ward-35A, Bhosari where Lande defeated Shiv Sena-BJP-RPI alliance candidate Sarika Kotwal.

Lande got 3,025 votes as against 963 of Kotawal.

Political experts say a combination of several factors, including her father’s goodwill, lessons learnt from her past poll failures, and support from other party workers owing to her connections worked in her favour. Bhosari MLA Vilas Lande and his wife Mohini Lande had put their weight behind Shradhha’s candidature by campaigning for her.

Only 29% voting was reported for the Bhosari bypoll wherein of total 17,101 voters, 4,951 caste their votes. The counting process started at 8am on Monday in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) under tight security. The result was declared within an hour by PCMC assistant commissioner of administration Dr Uday Tekale. NCP activists and supporters of Lande jubiliated taking out a celebratory procession of Shraddha Lande from PCMC head office.

The seat had fallen vacant after sitting corporator Seema Phuge was disqualified on charges of submitting a fake caste certificate. The ward is reserved for OBC women candidates. It was a prestigious fight for NCP and the ruling party of PCMC finally retained its seat.

The opposition candidate Sarika Kotwal is the wife of Shiv Sena leader Ashok Kotwal, on whose complaint Phuge was exposed. It was he one demanded her disqualification. Ashok Kotwal was later assaulted by a group of men, but his wife failed to encash the sympathy of the assault.

Asked what her agenda would be for coming months, Lande said, “I will try to speed up the work in my ward to finish the backlog created in last one and a half year.”

Cong’s Laxmi Ghodke wins in Ward 40

Laxmi Ghodke of Congress defeated MNS candidate Indumati Fulaware in the bye-election for Ward No. 40 – Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Udyan. The victory has ensured her retaining the post of leader of the opposition in the Pune Municipal Corporation for Congress.

Kalpana Bahirat of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) was disqualified after her caste certificate was found to be invalid. After her disqualification, a bye-election was held on Sunday. A total of 10,218 voters exercised their franchise recording 43 per cent voting. The counting of votes was done at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad memorial at Koregaon Park and it began at 8 am on Monday morning.

While Ghodke received 4,342 votes, Flaware got 3,893 votes, a margin of 449 votes. The BJP-Shiv Sena-RPI aliance candidate Sandhya Barake received 1,216 votes while Neelam Lalbighe of NCP got only 767 votes. Both NCP as well as BJP-SS-RPI candidates lost their deposits.

MNS’s Vasant More was holding the post of leader of the opposition, but after Bahirat’s disqualification, the strength of MNS was reduced to 28 from earlier 29. Congress, which had 28 Corporators in the House, now has 29 Corporators after Ghodke’s election from Ward number 40.

For Shraddha failure is the first step of success

Failure is the first step of success for newly elected PCMC corporator Shradha Lande. She had lost a chance to contest 2012 civic poll as she could not submit her caste certificate on time. This time round she made no mistake. Not only did she arrange everything in advance, but also won the seat after a gap of one and half year.

Shraddha completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and is working with a private hospital. Her mother is a housewife and she has two younger siblings. Her engagement ceremony had taken place hurriedly during the election campaign. Now, her marriage which was postponed due to the by-poll will held soon. She is one of the youngest and qualified corporators in PCMC until now.
