A jail guard attached with the central jail of Nashik was arrested for supplying drugs to inmates on Friday afternoon.

The guard, who was trying to go inside the jail with 10 pouches of ganja on Friday morning, was caught when other jail staffers present at the gate frisked him and found pouches of the drugs on him.

The arrested guard has been identified as Laxman Solanke, who has been working with the state jail for the last 25 years and is at present posted at the central jail of Nashik.

Speaking to DNA, additional superintendent Shamkant Pawar of central jail of Nashik confirmed the news, “Yes, the guard was arrested on Friday morning, when he was going inside for duty. When our guards stopped him at the gate and checked him, they found 10 pouches of ganja in his possession.”

Following the search, jail staff informed senior officials about the incident and also the police. Pawar added, “The police have arrested Solanke under relevant sections of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS). We have issued a departmental inquiry and Solanke has been suspended.”

An officer attached with state jail said, “Most of the criminals in the central jail of Nashik are members of Mumbai’s gangs. We are suspecting that Solanke could have taken money from these dreaded criminals, as he was guarding the anda cell in the jail.”

Solanke’s arrest is only the tip of the iceberg, as this is not the first time that the drugs or alcohol have been supplied to jail inmates in the state. After the murder of alleged Indian Mujahideen operative Quateel Siddique in the anda cell at Yerawada Central jail, the Yerawada jail authorities had suspended a jailor SN Rakh, who was allegedly supplying alcohol to the criminals in the jail. The fact that liquor was available for inmates at Yerawada jail came to light after Siddique’s postmortem report showed presence of alcohol in his system at the time of death.

Jail staffers connecting with inmates is not a new phenomenon in the state jails. In the past too, former inspector general of police MG Naravane of Yerawada Central Jail had ordered an inquiry and taken action against several jail staffers for their alleged leniency towards dreaded gangster Arun Gawli.
