When 7.8 magnitude earthquake shattered Nepal on Saturday, April 25, Pune-based mountaineer Umesh Zirpe was in Kathmandu along with his family. As Zirpe returned home safely, on Tuesday, April 26, he recalls the horrific incident and shares his plans of revisiting Nepal to provide aid to the victims.

Zirpe alongwith a trekking team of 12 members reached Kathmandu on April 24. Speaking with iamin, Zirpe said, “While I was returning from a friend’s house on April 25, I felt the tremors. We were in the taxi then and the vehicle tilted a little. Initially, we did not understand the intensity of the situation but it was later that we realised that walls of the adjacent buildings were falling apart. There was chaos and panic on the streets. All of us ran towards an open ground.”

Alerted other members of the team

Zirpe recalled, “I along with few others was waiting for the rest of the team to arrive Kathmandu on April 25. As soon as felt the tremors, we called one of the members. They informed us that they were at the airport claiming their luggage. I immediately met them at the airport and decided to stay back and help the rescue team.”

Stayed back to help the victims

Nepal being a destination for mountaineers and trekkers, Zirpe wanted to do something for his friends in the affected area. “People are scared and still sleep on the streets fearing another earthquake. These people need moral support. They also need man power to help them take to the nearest hospitals for treatment. They also need basic necessities such as food, clothes, water, etc. In the time of chaos, many people are still not receiving the help that they need.

Revisit the affected area
Although Zirpe arrived in Pune city on April 26, he is scheduled to revisit Nepal, on April 30. “I will stay there for a minimum of 10 days. This time. I am going with a team of 10 people with enough help material for the victims. We have requested people to donate help items for the victims,” explained Zirpe.
