Pune: In a tragic accident, a two-and-a-half year old girl was knocked down by a speeding truck on Katraj-Kondhwa bypass on Friday morning. According to the police, after knocking down the girl, the truck driver ran away leaving his vehicle behind. Worst, the onlookers did not come forward to take the girl to hospital and it were the Kondhwa police personnel who rushed the girl to a hospital in their official vehicle, but their efforts went in vain.
The deceased has been identified as Khushi Pardeshi, a resident of Undri. Senior police inspector Pandharinath Mandhare of Kondhwa police station said that the mishap took place in front of her father and elder sister.
“The child, who was in her father’s arms, got down near the road as she wanted to attend to nature’s call. After getting down, she started running across the road when she was was mowed down by a speeding truck,” Mandhare said, adding that he and his driver were on the patrolling duty in the same area when the accident took place.
“After reaching the spot, we saw that the onlookers were not coming forward to help the girl or her father who was in a state of shock. We picked up the girl and rushed her to the hospital in our vehicle where she was declared brought dead” he said. Later, the cop drove the abandoned truck to the police station.
“We have registered a case against one Kiran Rathod under section IPC and Motor Vehicle Act and he was arrested on Friday evening,” he said.
