Without naming politicians or powers that be in the state, the man behind the success of Konkan Railway and Delhi Metro E Shreedharan on Thursday said that Pune had lost five years on unnecessary squabbling over Metro project.

Shreedharan was speaking at a function organised to confer upon him the prestigious Lokmanya Tilak Award instituted by Tilak Smarak Trust. Trust chief Dr Deepak Tilak presented the award to Shreedharan. The award comprises a gold medal, a memento and Rs1 lakh.

Underlining the importance of completing infrastructure projects in stipulated time, Shreedharan said, “I had the privilege of preparing the detailed project report for the Pune’s Metro project five years back. It’s time is money, literally for such projects, as cost overruns increase with delay, and the delays are mostly because of lack of punctuality. Most projects in our country suffer from such delays and cost overruns. Pune has lost five years brangling on Metro project.”

Shreedharan explained the need for having four pillars of punctuality, integrity, professional competence and social accountability for the success of such projects. “Konkan Railway Corporation and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had a unique work culture that followed these four things. Pune authorities must follow certain discipline and work culture if they want the Pune Metro project to succeed,” he said.

Shreedharan made it clear that no Metro project in any part of the World was making profits. DMRC completed first phase of 65km in just seven years and three months, and within the given cost. Similarly, the second phase spanning 134km was completed in exactly four and a half years. Shreedharan said that the construction of the 11km line of Mumbai Metro had already taken six years and it might go on for another year.

How Metro helped Delhi

The Delhi Metro carries 23lakh passengers daily, hence putting off one lakh vehicles off the roads. This saves one lakh tonne of petroleum products. This helps in avoiding 30 tonnes of pollutants. Besides, the Metro saves every passenger 28 minutes of travel time, which creates additional 80 lakh man days for the city.
