Posing as Symbiosis director, suspect promises seat to NRI woman and dupes her of `2.35 lakh
The admission touts continue to be on the prowl in the city. The Yerawada police on Sunday booked the wife of a Merchant Navy officer for posing as the principal director of Symbiosis College, Dr Vidya Yeravdekar, and allegedly cheating an NRI woman to the tune of Rs2.35 lakh. The trickster promised the 38-year-old woman that she can secure a seat for her daughter in the Liberal Arts course of the college under the management quota.
The suspect has been identified as Parvati Raju Chaddha, a resident of Udaybaug in Ghorpadi area. A complaint in this regard was lodged by Nisha Pradip Bhojwani, who stays in Nigeria.
According to Bhojwani, her daughter Ritika was keen to get enrolled for the course but there were no seats available in the general as well as management quota.
“We met Chaddha, who told us that she shares a good rapport with Yeravdekar and can ensure a seat for our daughter,” said Bhojwani, adding, “Chaddha claimed that she is not just an agent but wants to help us in good faith.”
After a few days, Chaddha told the complainant that she had spoken to Yeravdekar and the admission will be done but it will require some money. “She even called us and introduced herself as Yeravdekar, which we failed to suspect,” said Bhojwani.
Later, the complainant gave Chaddha Rs2.35 lakh and waited for her response. However, she started avoiding their calls and also gave lame excuses. Bhojwani then approached Dr Yeravdekar, who said that she does not know any such person. The principal director also made it clear that there is no seat available in the course.
“We then approached the Deccan Gymkhana police and registered a case against Chaddha,”said Bhojwani.
While speaking to dna, senior police inspector Manohar Joshi of Deccan Gymkhana police station said that they have registered a case and transferred it to the Yerawada police station as the transaction of money had taken place in their jurisdiction.
When contacted, Yeravdekar said that Bhojwani had come to the college a few months ago for admission. However, as there were no seats the college refused them admission.
“Recently, Bhojwani came again and gave the reference of Chaddha. I told them that I do not know anybody by that name and refuted her claims of any conversation with her,” Yeravdekar said, adding, she contacted commissioner of police Gulabrao Pol and a complaint was registered.
