Can the blame of poor road sense in Puneites be thrust at incapable tutors? Out of the 240 motor driving schools in the city, over 100 are worse than ‘third class’ and are recommended to shut down if it does not take urgent steps to upgrade.

After a gap of four years, Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) is conducting a qualitative survey of the 240-odd driving schools of which they have covered 153.

Nearly 70% of these schools lack basic infrastructure and quality instructors and are rated as ‘sub-standard’ and falling under the lowest D category.

Pune RTO officer Arun Yeola said that the survey is still ongoing but will prove to be an eye-opener for people who should check the quality and rating of driving schools before enrollment.”

Of the 250 schools, we have finished survey of 153. Only 5 schools qualify for Class A while 42 were rated as Class B training centres. About six driving schools qualified for Class C while remainder have been clubbed under Class D. The latter has been served notices to improve within six months or shut operations as they are too bad to teach anyone.”The last such survey was done in 2009 and even then 70% of driving schools were found sub-standard according to RTO norms. Of the 190 schools surveyed in 2009, nearly 100 came under either Class C or D. Asked about the parameters for rating driving schools, Yeola said they should have good training modules, chart of traffic signals, good infrastructure, qualified trainers who are aware of the rule.

“We also check how many students from the school have cleared the driving test held at Pune RTO. It is essential to have good training schools only then the increasing number of road accident and traffic violation will reduce,” said Yeola.

Rating system

Driving schools who get more than 75 percent fall under A category.

Marks up to 60 to 75 percent under B category.

Marks up to 50 to 60 percent is C category
