The decision to serve her husband scrambled eggs (bhurji) instead of egg omelette as demanded by him, proved costly for a 20-year-old woman from Dhankawadi as her angry husband set her on fire on Sunday night.

The victim, Puja Salunke, lodged a complaint with Bharati Vidyapeeth police station on Monday evening stating that she was assaulted and later set on fire by her husband who was angry that she had prepared an omelette and not bhurji.

The police have arrested her husband Anil (32), a resident of Goyalkar Apartment in Dhankawadi under the relevant sections of Indian Penal Code, 1860 comprising attempt to murder and assault, said assistant police inspector AB Koli who is investigating the case.

Inspector (crime) Sunil Yadav of Bharati Vidyapeeth police station said, “Anil works as a labourer in Market Yard area while the victim, Puja is Anil’s second wife. The marriage took place six months ago. The incident took place on Sunday at 11 pm, when Anil came home and demanded to his wife an egg omelette but she instead prepared egg bhurji on which Anil got angry. He started abusing and assaulting her and dragged her to the kitchen and poured kerosene on her. He set her on fire with a candle.”

On Tuesday, Anil was produced before the court of judicial magistrate (first class) and was remanded in police custody till Friday.
