Pune: Are you a pet lover and feel moved when you see a stray stranded in the rains? If yes, then here is how you can help. A city based NGO called People For Animals (PFA) has organised a camp at multiple locations where people can donate items - from things that can help in building shelters for animals to medicines, in a bid to crowd source rain friendly shelters for strays of the city.
The campaign named Open Your Hearts started yesterday by tying a heart-shaped balloon to the stray dogs with the messages like 'Help Me', 'I am your friend' written on it. One of the organisers, Tanvi Kulkarni said, "Through this activity, we are trying to make an emotional appeal to the citizens to make their donations in any form they want right from the medicines to money. We will also be distributing pamphlets with all the information included so that people can anytime drop their help to the Handewadi shelter house or can also call our volunteers, who will come to doorstep to collect the donations. We have our presence at NIBM Road, Camp, Koregaon Park and Fatima Nagar. People can donate their stuff right on the spot or even contact our volunteers later."

The campaign is an appeal by the PFA Pune to contribute in the process of making the shelters for these animals to cope in the rains and equip the hospital at the same time. When mostly people do not have an idea what way they could contribute to the cause. But PFA Pune has found this way getting inspired by a campaign with similar fashion organised in Chile by an animal welfare trust.
Manoj Oswal, Animal Welfare Officer (AWBI) said, "Animal Welfare Board of India has always been promoting such activities that involves welfare of street or stray animals. It is an attempt to build harmony between people and animals. Pune already has more than 400 volunteers working for stray animals and through the campaign this time, we are hopeful to get even citizens involved in every way possible."

People willing to donate any stuff or money for the cause, can always drop their help at the Handewadi shelter for stray animals (where more than 300 stray animals like dogs, cats, cows and birds are sheltered) or can even contact the volunteers on 9881990586 / 9823751602 / 8390791119.
