If you are taking the old Pune-Mumbai highway, then be ready to spend long hours as the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), is planning to start its long pending work of constructing 15 flyovers on the highway from this year.
The work is expected to complete by 2019 and till that time increasing numbers of commuters are expected to face lot of inconvenience while taking the old highway route to ply between two major cities of the state.

After carrying out the study of the entire stretch the expert committee had submitted the report to MSRDC for the approval, according to the study it was observed that many motorist use the old highway to reach Lonavala to avoid toll charges levied for using Pune-Mumbai expressway.
As per the data of the highway traffic police more than 30 thousand vehicles use the old Pune-Mumbai highway on an average everyday. Once the work of the flyover will start it will be nightmare for the commuters using the old highway as there will be diversion and the road will be obstructed at various place.
MSRDC chief engineer Arun Deodhar said,"After we have got the detailed report of the project last year we have submitted it to the state government infrastructure committee we will be getting the reply from the by the end of this months, after that we will be rolling out the tenders we are positive that the construction work will commence this year."
Deodhar adds,"The volume of traffic on expressway is increasing everyday and it is expected to grow more in the coming years, therefore it is essential to have a proper planning in place so the burden of the expressway can be shared by the old highway."
The old highway will be broadened from four lanes to six lanes, and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be extended from six to eight lanes. This will make the total travelling flat to three hours and forty-five minutes thus saving a lot of fuel. The approximate length of these flyovers will be 300-500 metres and will be built between Panvel and Pune.

An MSRDC official said," Once the construction the motorist will not only be saving travelling time and fuel cost but they will not have any additional toll to use the flyovers.
Superintendent of Police (highway) Dilip Bhujbal, said," It will be quite a task to keep the smooth flow of traffic during the construction of the flyover; we will have to do special planning for the same. Especially in the night when there more number of heavy vehicles plying in the highway."

The Chosen Spots

The flyovers speculated to be built at Dan Phata, Lodivali, Chowk Naka, Karjat Phata, Ramwadi-Nishiland Park, Nadode Gaon, Khalapur, Ghodawli Phata, Mahad, Palasadhari, Shedwali and Khopoli so as to curtail accident rates at key intersections along the NH-4.
