Thanks to the long weekend starting Thursday, the popular hillside destinations and tourist spots along the coastal belt will be packed to capacity.
With Independence Day holiday falling on Thursday, many working professionals are taking a day off on Friday and heading away from the hustle bustle of the city. Travel operators said that while hill stations of Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani and Matheran were hot favourites, many families are also opting for coastal tourist spots of Ganpatipule and Tarkarli.
Most of the private resorts and government resort like Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), were booked till the middle of next week.
Speaking to dna, a MTDC official said, “Almost all the resorts are full till the next weekend. Tourists are more inclined to visit Goa, Konkan, Matheran and Karla. People from Mumbai and Pune are the ones who prefer to visit these places and most of the rooms were booked a month in advance.”
Travel and tour operators claimed that all the buses and taxis were been booked until next week.
Arsah Memon of International Travels on Pune Station said, “Due to the long weekend and Raksha Bandhan falling on Tuesday, most of the people are booking taxis for places like Matheran, Konkan, Goa and Mahabaleshwar.”
Shirish Bhosale of Sai Tours and Travels in Hadapsar said, “For most of the techies, the first option is hill stations due to less travelling distance.”
Anthony Horne (34), a software professional, said that he was heading with his friends to Goa for four days. Working professional Preeti Borkar (28) from Nagpur said, “As Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan are falling within the week, I have taken leave and am planning to surprise my younger brother and spend some time with my parents.”
