What do you do when your laundryman misplaces your clothes? You scold him for 10 minutes and then find another laundry guy.

Ghorpadi Peth-based Madhu Nagori dragged her laundryman to consumer court for misplacing her husband’s coat and fought for eight years.

Eventually, the Additional Pune District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum observed it was too late for the coat to be returned, but ordered a compensation of Rs5,000 for the mental agony she suffered.

Nagori had given her husband’s coat and trousers to Deccan Drycleaners in July 2005 for dry cleaning and she was promised delivery four days later.

However, when she went to collect the clothes she was told that while the trousers were ready, the coat wasn’t. She refused to accept just the trousers and wanted the coat, too. As she didn’t get the clothes despite two visits later, she slapped a legal notice in September 2005. The laundryman replied to her saying that the coat was ready and she could take it, but he could no longer find the trousers. So he offered to pay for the same. Nagori didn’t accept the offer citing that both the coat and trousers were from the same batch and if new trousers were bought, they won’t match the coat.

Eventually, the case was moved to the additional Pune district consumer disputes redressal forum where the president Anjali Deshmukh and member S K Pacharane went through documents and claims filed by both Nagori and her laundryman Rajendra Gaikwad.

The forum observed that Gaikwad had kept the coat ready and had offered to pay for the misplaced trousers. So he had not violated the contract of service. But it was too late to return the coat that had been lying with him since 2005. As the complainant didn’t have any receipt with her to substantiate that she had indeed purchased the coat and trousers for Rs10,000, the forum didn’t allow any refund. But since the laundryman had deficiency in his service, the forum awarded Rs5,000 towards the it and Rs1,000 for the complaint cost.

The lady didn’t get her clothes back, but her laundryman has surely got a lesson for life.
