While the police personnel are busy averting crime against women across the city, here is one among their own clan who has complained of sustained sexual harassment by a male colleague over the past several years.
A complaint has been submitted by a lady constable attached to Pune traffic branch that a male colleague has not only been harassing her over the phone demanding that she keep intimate physical relations with him but also got himself transferred to her department on two occasions to be close to her.
The frustrated woman constable finally approached the Women’s Help Cell (WHC) of the Pune police, who summoned the suspect. WHC officials said that the male constable is married and has two sons. On two occasions, the woman constable complained to her seniors after the suspect got himself transferred to her department. Consequently, he was transferred to a police station but she didn’t lodge an official complaint then. It was only recently that she lodged the complaint since transfer of department also didn’t deter the male cop from making obscene calls to her.
Senior police inspector Smita Jadhav of WHC said, “We had received a complain from the lady constable and thereafter we summoned the suspect cop and recorded his statement. The constable has denied all allegations levelled against him.”
According to the complainant’s application, the constable used to call her and force her to have relations with him. He also got himself transferred to her department and used to create problems for her.
Jadhav said, “Though, the constable has denied allegations, we will probe the case further. We will also check call records of his phone and thereafter we can come to some logical conclusion.”
She has hinted that if the constable is found guilty, a case can be registered and appropriate action will be taken against him.
At present, the woman constable is working with the traffic department while the suspect is attached to Hinjewadi police station.
