Irrigation officials release 9,511 cusec water following continuous rainfall

A total of 35 villages surrounding the Koyna Dam have been cut off after the water released from the dam submerged the Sangamnagar Bridge on Wednesday.

Around 9,511 cusec water was released from all the six gates of the dams on Wednesday after the catchment area received continuous rainfall. The water level in the dam is increasing by nearly 2 tmc daily.

On Wednesday morning, the water stored in the dam was 79.74 tmc. After the water level increased, the irrigation department decided to release the water. The gates of the dam were lifted by two feet at 12.30 pm and the water was released in the riverbed. Superintending engineer of irrigation department NV Shinde, said, “If the rain continues, more water will have to be released from the dam.”
