Strange it may sound but the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) does not have the facility to attend to any emergency fire call in a fast growing suburb like Kondhwa, which has a population of over five lakh.
This, despite the fact that a new fire station has already been constructed in the area six months ago but the building has not been handed over to the Pune fire brigade. In case of any eventuality, the fire brigade has to sent fire tenders from Bhavani Peth.
Kondhwa is one of the fastest developing areas in the city with a large number of residential complexes coming up there. In fact, the civic body has now decided to include Yewalewadi in the PMC limits, which will increase the jurisdiction of Pune fire brigade.
The fire brigade had given the proposal for a new fire station at Kondhwa so that in case of emergency it can rush to the spot without wasting much time.
Prashant Ranpise, deputy chief fire officer of Pune fire brigade said, “Generally we get two to three calls of fire from Kondhwa and NIBM Road areas daily. Every time we have to send fire tenders from our head office in Bhavani Peth, which takes a lot of time as they have to pass through huge traffic. “
“The PMC had given the contract to a developer to construct the fire station in Kondhwa area. It has been constructed near Jyoti Restaurant on NIBM Road, which is a convenient spot for us to reach to any location in Kondhwa and Hadapsar areas. The construction of the new fire station has been completed six months ago but we are yet to get the possession of the building,” said Ranpise.
Talking about the inordinate delay in handing over the building to the fire brigade, PMC deputy commissioner and in-charge of the civic land and estate department RT Shinde said, “The developer has completed the construction but he is not handing it over to the PMC. We have served him a number of notices but in vain. Now, we will have to approach the building department to take some action against the developer to speed up the process.”
