Veteran theatre personality and the man behind the success of Marathi theatre group Aavishkaar, Arun Kakade has been elected president of the 94th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Sammelan. The Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad has decided to convene a separate meeting to decide the venue of the Sammelan after heated exchanges on the issue at Sunday’s meeting.
Veteran singer-actress of Marathi musical theatre Keerti Shiledar, Madan Gadkari and Tara Bhavalkar were also in the fray for the post of president. The voting took place in Mumbai on Sunday and Kakade, who is active in the Marathi theatre for the last 61 years, was elected.
For the last five years, the president of the Natya Sammelan has been elected unanimously without any election, but election became inevitable this year. Mohan Joshi, president of Natya Parishad, said that since there are invitations from Satara, Pandharpur and Nagpur for hosting the Sammelan, a meeting of the governing board would be held in the next fortnight to decide the issue.
Kakade told media persons that being elected to the post has given him a sense of increased responsibility as a theatre person. He said he would try to work with the policy of inclusion of all theatre departments for the betterment of Marathi theatre. Kakade started his career in Pune. He shifted to Mumbai and joined then youngsters like late Vijay Tendulkar, Vijaya Mehta, late Arvind Deshpande,and late Madhav Watve who were active in the Rangaayan group.
