Stomach disorders have become a regular thing among people of all age. City doctors claim that they have seen almost a 50 per cent rise in such patients in the past few years.

The most prominent factor leading to these disorders are junk food, which include a lot of added spices. Junk food does not only lead to gastrointestinal disorder, but is also related to diseases like hernia, appendicitis and piles. Doctors also claim that excessive consumption of junk food can put you at an increased risk of developing colon cancer.

“With hot and spicy fast food trend rising in the country, more and more people are suffering from diseases like hernia, appendicitis and piles. Stomach infection might sound a usual problem, but it could take a toll on your body and happy living," says Dr Kiran Bhise, general and laproscopy surgeon at Lokmanya Hospital.

Take the case of 19-year-old Francosis Sylvian. He hails from Europe. He came to India for studies and was living alone, so was forced to eat out everyday. One day he suddenly experienced an acute abdominal pain and had intermittent bleeding and pain during defecation. He was taken to the Lokmanya Hospital and was operated successfully.

"Sylvian was diagnosed with hemorrhoids, which are vascular structures in the anal canal, which help with stool control. He ate outside food almost everyday, which was the major reason for the disorder. We operated him a few weeks ago and he is completely fit now,” Bhise explains.

Doctors claim that the major reason for these ailments is lack of fibre in junk food, which leads to poor absorption of nutrients by the body.

“Any kind of junk food does not contain many vegetables, hence lack in fibre. Fibre is very important for digestion of food and antioxidation of blood cells. This causes irritated bowels and other stomach infections,” says Dr Harshal Gadikar, gastroenterologist, hepatologist & therapeutic endoscopist at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.

Another example is a 21-year-old BPO professional. She lives with her parents, but ate out almost everyday in the night because of her odd office hours. One day she suddenly experienced acute abdominal pain and vomiting. The doctor subjected her to various tests and she was diagnosed with acute acalculous cholecystitis, a condition in which the gall bladder shows inflammation. She underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy and is recovering at the Aditya Birla Hospital.

According to doctors, junk food not only causes stomach disorders, but also puts one at an increased risk of colon cancer.

“Junk food causes irritable bowel and a lot of infections, including appendicitis. The add-ons like soft drinks further worsen the condition by increasing the acidity of the body. A person consuming junk food regularly is 3.5 times more likely to suffer from colon cancer,” said Dr Harshal Rajekar, heaptobiliary and transplant surgeon, Ruby hall clinic.
