Taking lessons from the past, the Yerawada Jail authorities have decided to upgrade systems at the visiting rooms in the prison for effective monitoring of the conversations between the jail inmates and the visitors.

A number of previous incidents wherein passing of crucial information and prohibited contraband had taken place during the interaction among the prisoners and the visitors. This prompted the jail officials to redesign the visiting rooms by putting up glass partitions to segregate them.

Once the glass partitions are developed, the jail inmates will have to talk to the inmates through specially designed intercom system that would allow the jail officials to eavesdrop on the conversations.

Underworld don Arun Gawli allegedly passed instructions to his gang members during such visits. Even Yogesh Raut, the prime suspect in software engineer Nayana Pujari kidnap, gang-rape and murder case, had used such visits to plan his escape from the custody after being taken to Sassoon Hospital. Local goon Sharad Mohol had allegedly given instructions to his gang and family to step up the gang’s extortion operations taking advantage of the notoriety he had earned by killing alleged Indian Mujahideen operative Qateel Siddiqui.

Besides, such meetings have also been resulting in passing of various contraband prohibited in the jail. Jail officials say that the possibility of prisoners getting banned articles like money, drugs and spices, which come handy to add taste to food served in jail, might stop after redesigning the jail.

The jail authorities also feel that the new system will help them mitigate the chaotic situation that prevails at the main gate during the visiting hours.

Deputy inspector general (prison) Rajendra Dhamne said, “The intercom system will help curb many problems.”

Moreover, jail officials say, use of intercoms will allow them record conversations which thereby will improve the quality of criminal intelligence.

Dhamne added, “This system will help us get major clues and inklings about the inmate’s plans. The work of the system is almost complete and its use may start at Yerawada Jail next week.”
