Three years after the blast, even as Puneites were delighted to see the much awaited German Bakery (GB) unofficially open its door to the public early last month, they were sadly disappointed when the bakery shut down once again.

It was started merely to announce that the bakery would be ‘opening soon’. The final touches on the revamped bakery were still underway but the new management of GB say that this time next week, the much loved bakery of Pune will once again permanently be open to public.

Ajinkya Udan, who has taken the place on lease from the owner Kharose family, said nearly hundreds of people inquired about the bakery’s reopening. “The final touches are nearly over and in a week’s time, we will open up and that too permanently. The new German Bakery will have the same old menu but with a blend of new healthy food. Also, the look has changed a little but is blended with the old feel so that people can cherish the past memories,” said Udan.

He added that GB could accommodate 90 customers at a time with separate sitting arrangements for large groups. “As of now, we are doing research work on German breads and muffins. It is not our aim to blindly copy old menu but improvise and give the best quality food to our customers,” said Udan who added that they are still tracking the old staff as their new staff comprises 25 people and the chefs are from Bengal and Nepal.

However this time, the bakery’s management is being extra cautious about security too. “There will be some 16 CCTV cameras monitoring the place 24x7 along with one metal detector gate, a hand metal detector, five security guards and two private guards to make the entire area more safe and secure. We have not kept a single pin that will bring painful memories of the blast,” added Udan.

Umesh Pongadwale, owner of Kwality bakery, who saw the new GB come up after the blasts, said, “Since the renovation work has started, many people come to my shop and inquire as to when GB will open. Most people are happy with the new look I think.”
Aryan Paul, resident of Koregaon Park, said, “This new fresh look is simply amazing yet it gives the same old feeling. I hope that the quality of food and beverages are the same. I can barely wait to chill out with my friends at the revamped GB.”
