When Rajesh Rao developed the idea of creating a platform for game developers, little did he know that it would grow on to be one of the most recognised and appreciated conferences for the industry.

In its fifth edition this year, NASSCOM, in association with dna, aims at changing the gaming landscape in India and nurturing its huge potential. Additionally, to recognise achievements in game development in India and encourage the creation of intellectual property, it is also organising the first edition of the NGF Award.

Rao, chair, NASSCOM Gaming Forum shared, “It is an annual event organised by the industry body for the advancement of interactive gaming entertainment through talks, panels, super-pitches, tutorials and more. The NASSCOM Game Developer Conference (NGDC) is aimed at bringing to the forefront the exciting gaming eco-system that exists in India.”

“Only in India, gaming and animation is spoken of together. But they are two completely different things which the market has slowly started to realise. When I started my company in ‘97, we made mistakes along the way and learnt. Today, it is not difficult to start a gaming company and this is our way of providing the right experience to motivated people,” he said.

This year, the conference will also release a white paper that talks about the legal aspects to be considered while developing and releasing a game. “It’s a platform to meet, create and share. We are trying to help the industry in every possible way. It has picked up fantastic momentum in the last few years from just 25 companies in 2012 to 200 today. In the process, we also realised that meeting once in a year is not enough and so city chapters were born to meet quarterly and discuss the industry,” Rao said.

Rao believes that Pune market is doing very well with an advantage of being close to Mumbai. “The Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh governments are moving quickly with rules and incentives for the gaming industry and I feel the Maharashtra government should also take active interest for it to flourish. Pune has a huge base of eco-system which can be utilised for the industry but it is not only about infrastructure always. The city has a huge student and youth population which works perfectly for us,” he added.

On the sidelines of the conference, activities like Bring your own Game (BYOG), Game Showcase Trailers, Indie Elevator Pitch and Adobe Game Jam will also be organised. The NGDC will be held at JW Marriott, SB Road on November 15 and 16.
