Pune: There is cause of concern after India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted below normal rainfall. The Agrometeorological department, under the guidance of Ministry of Agriculture is preparing a contingency plan to ensure that agriculture production is not hampered even if country gets below average rainfall.
N Chattopadhyay, deputy director general of Meteorology (Agricultural Meteorology,) said, “For the first time, IITM is providing weather forecast for 15 days. Depending on that forecast, Agromet will be issuing advisory to the farmers. We are taking help of mobile service providers that will give update the farmers regarding the weather changes.”
Agromet department is giving advisories depending on the changes in weather, right from the sowing period of farming. If there is a delay in rainfall they will inform farmers about delay and accordingly they can cut short the durations of crops. They’ll suggest alternate crops in case there is lesser rain.
