The chief controller (R&D) of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), Bhujanga Rao, said that shipping, naval operations, oil and gas exploration are the main causes behind the noises in the ocean. He added that this has an adverse effect on the marine species and that it is high time that India works on reducing the noise level in the ocean to protect the marine species.

Rao was delivering a key-note address on the topic ‘Anthropogenic Noise and its impact on marine species- An Indian Perspective.’ Air Vice Marshal PP Khandekar, commandant of the Military Institute of Technology (MILIT) was also present at the seminar which was oragnised on the occasion of ‘World Environment Day’ on Wednesday

. “India cannot be silent on such a serious topic which has endangered various marine species in the ocean. Though DRDO primarily carries out defence related research work, it is our social responsibility to make sure that the anthropogenic noise level is reduced,” Rao said.

He added, “The noise created by humans in the ocean is acoustic noise and it troubles the marine species and they can lose direction in the ocean, which can endanger their lives. This especially effects bigger species like whales and dolphins. These species communicate through certain sounds in the water. “We need to work on the technology which will bring down the noise pollution in the ocean,” Rao said.

Air vice marshal PP Khandekar, said, “The ocean and coastal resources are currently managed by more than 20 federal agencies but there is no robust regulatory mechanism for addressing ocean noise pollution in a comprehensive way.
