In view of the Lok Sabha elections, the Pune police and the excise department have seized illicit liquor, fire arms and other weapons worth Rs 25 lakhs in the city, Pimpri and rural areas of the district.
District collector Saurabh Rao, who is also the district election officer, told media persons that non-bailable warrants have been issued to 1,111 people from the city limits and 1,500 from the rural areas as a precautionary measure. He said illegal weapons and illicit liquor worth 1.25 lakhs have been seized from the district rural areas. The liquor and weapons are worth Rs. 25 lakhs, he added. Meanwhile, cases have been filed against 2,500 people to avoid law and order problems during the elections. Bonds have been taken from another 300 people and preventive action taken against 2,500 others in this regard, said Rao. As per the rules, weapons from 2,750 licence holders have been deposited in the government custody.
