Despite strong opposition from public and political leaders, Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal commissioner Dr Shrikar Pardeshi is in an unrelenting mood when it comes to unauthorised constructions.

Addressing a public meeting organised by NGO Nagrik Chetana Manch, Pardeshi said, “Despite being one of the fastest growing townships, issue of illegal construction is the biggest concern faced by PCMC.”

Asked about the action taken by the PCMC administration, Pardeshi said, “After March 2012, when the the demolition drive began in full swing, the government had issued 65,000 notices. In July 2013 alone, 321 out of 2,800 illegal structures were razed. FIR was filed against 1,715 owners. The other structures would be brought down soon without any delay.”

Emphasizing on the three ‘W’s - Water, Waste and Waste water, Pardeshi said, “PCMC needs constant monitoring on town planning, waste management and traffic among the top areas to work.” Urging for more participation from citizens and NGOs, Pardeshi said it would help in better governance.

Inquired about the steps taken by PCMC administration for citizens, he said the 19-lakh plus populace of PCMC is benefiting from improved town planning and solid waste management that the corporation has undertaken.

“For quicker availability of information, the corporation is setting up call centres and also compiling booklets with details of all utility services to its citizens. The corporation also hopes to add 15 new Citizen Facility Centres(CFCs) to its existing 5 centres by the year end,” he said.

With ever increasing traffic in PCMC area, there is an urgent need to provide more subsidised funds to the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mandal Limited (PMPML) services along with relocation of more than 9000 street hawkers.

While asked about commencement in delay of BRTS services, Pardeshi said, “There were some legal litigations regarding the work of flyovers at several places, which have now got resolved. Adding to the complications, there was delay in completion of building of bus stations as well. But the services would start in march 2014.”
