The Chinchwad police’s ‘scant regard’ for a diktat by Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol has exposed their callousness in dealing with sensitive cases.

Even as Pol had strictly ordered a few months ago that only ‘female officers will probe cases of crime against women’, the Chinchwad police deputed a male police sub-inspector to probe the alleged rape of a 22-year-old mentally challenged girl by a ward boy at a private hospital in Walhekarwadi on April 16.

The police came to know about the incident on Friday morning, after which the male sub-inspector SP Mane was asked to look into the case.

It was only in the evening that a woman PSI from Pimpri police station was appointed as the investigating officer following instructions by deputy commissioner of police (Zone III) Shahaji Umap.

Shockingly, before that, neither the assistant commissioner of police nor the senior police inspector had realised their fault.

Chinchwad police station in-charge PB Lokhande said, “The male PSI was just helping in the case. He was not probing it.”

However, sources at Chinchwad police station told dna that the police station has three women PSIs, who are all on leave. As a result, Mane had been asked to look into the rape case.

After the New Delhi gang-rape incident, Pol had ordered that all women-related cases be investigated by women police officers only. Accordingly, all the police stations were issued the top cop’s instructions.

About The case
A 22-year-old-mentally challenged girl from a well-off family was allegedly raped by a ward boy at a private hospital in Walhekarwadi area of Chinchwad on April 16. The victim was undergoing treatment at the hospital for the past four months. The Chinchwad police have arrested the ward boy along with the doctor couple who allegedly tried to hush up the matter by offering money to the victim’s family. The arrested ward boy has been identified as Subhash Balasaheb Modad (left) and the doctor couple as Dr Vishal and Varsha Sonawane.

Didn’t expect to be caught
Interrogations of Modad have revealed that he took advantage of the victim’s mental condition. Sub inspector PR Zanzurne said, “Modad told us that he thought that he will never be caught as the victim is mentally unstable.”
