Hostel ragging case: Cops mull suo motu action against 6 suspects

Victim claims he was nearly stripped and his belongings were thrown out

In a shocking revelation in the ragging case of a 16-year-old polytechnic student living at Firodiya Hostel, six senior students had stormed into his room and near total stripped him. They threw his belongings out of the room and threatened to throw him out of the hostel. They even forced him to sign a letter apologising for his stance against the seniors.

The Deccan Gymkhana police said that after the victim got vocal against the seniors’ ragging tactics, the seniors gathered other juniors at his room before barging in his room. This was revealed after the Deccan Gymkhana police recorded the statement of the 16-year-old victim student, they said.

The cops are now thinking of lodging a case of ragging against all six students who have been already expelled from the hostel. The six who had harassed the victim are -- Gaurav Abad, Anuj Modi, Anand Runwal, Manish Pitale, Srinivas Kathed and Nikhil Kataria.

“Though the boy’s parents are still not ready to lodge an official complaint, we are taking a legal opinion on the basis of which we can lodge a suo motu complaint,” senior police inspector, Manohar Joshi of Deccan Gymkhana police station said. He said that they will also notify the respective colleges of the students to take appropriate action.

As per the victim’s statement, he and his brother, also in the hostel, ignored these seniors, so they asked him abuse his elder brother. They tortured all juniors forcing them to tell dirty jokes and dance for them.

“All this they used to do till late in the night, because of which we couldn’t even sleep properly,” he stated.

He said he finally gathered all juniors and decided to complain to the hostel authorities. However, some juniors leaked this to the seniors and they decided to corner the victim.

When they went home for vacation, he narrated the incident to his parents and subsequently, the local guardian Dinesh Munot was alerted and the hostel authorities ordered an inquiry and rusticated all six students.
