Lately, the city has been hosting a number of culinary masterclasses which has become a rage among food lovers as they get to interact with expert celebrity chefs, learn a few tricks and taste international dishes in a few hours long workshop. Homemakers are becoming the regular members of these masterclasses. We find out more about the trend.

Vinita Saxena, 55, runs a small time baking business for her friends and near ones but wants to expand it soon. "They call me an expert when it comes to cooking but when I plan to expand my baking business, I thought of taking some expert advice and hence gave a try to one of these masterclasses. Usually you look for an expert opinion in a masterclass as they are conducted by celebrity chefs."
Likewise, Gagan Nath is a mother of two from Wanawdi and attends the masterclasses just to know the healthy ways to cook bakery items for her school going kids.

Chef Rushina Munshaw Ghildiyal who is conducting a masterclass at Hyatt Pune speaks about the trend. She said, "I think masterclasses is the new trend in Pune lately as people are traveling more and as it is said, are becoming global citizens. Hence, they feel the need to learn international cuisines but from experts. So the masterclasses are usually attended to know the tricks of cooking international food mainly."

And how a masterclass is different from a cooking class?

"Masterclasses are conducted by more established and expert chefs as compared to regular cooking classes. Eventually, it has a wider appeal when expertise is concerned. For those who are already good cooks and want to excel further, a masterclass is the place to be," Ghildiyal told.

Pastry Chef Gerwin D'souza, Cortyard by Marriott, who has already conducted two masterclasses specialized in pastries and breads feels that Puneites are choosing masterclasses over TV cookery shows and books because it gives a chance to interact with the chef.

"A masterclass gives you every detail from temperature to some unknown technique to cook your food; and this is what people love about the classes. I mostly get housewives and small time businesswomen attending my classes. They know the recipe already but they want to interact with a professional chef to understand minute details about a cuisine. They are more interested into the Q and A session after the class. Nowadays, people are attending masterclasses to know the techniques of cooking healthy and diet food without altering the ingredients. This is something they can get in a masterclass only!" D'souza adds.

Hit cuisines among Puneites
