Not just the main roads, patrolling is needed in the shortcut lanes as well. This was the common sentiment expressed by the members of  Hinjewadi Industries Association (HIA) who held a meeting with the police recently on the issue of increasing cases of robberies, especially targetting techies who travel late at night.

Even as the spate of robberies in Hinjewadi area continue unabated with a special force being readied for night patrolling and detection of such cases, members of HIA pointed out how the traffic jam problem forces many employees working in the IT hub to take shortcuts. One of the most used road being the Chande-Nande Road, that passes through several villages and connects Balewadi to Sus Road.

Sunil Pailwan, facility and administrative head, HIA, said, “During night, the IT professionals who work in Hinjewadi and live in Kothrud, Warje, Katraj, Pashan and Susgaon use this road due to the traffic jams on the main road. The 9-km stretch is in a bad condition and hence motorists are forced to slow down.”

“In the past few months, HIA has received five to six complaints which state that some people assemble in groups on the road, and when the techie slows down his vehicle, they surround him and rob him,” he added.

“We have demanded that CCTV cameras should be put up on this stretch to nab such groups and the cameras should be attached to police stations. We are ready to help in this task. The HIA has a special quick response team to deal with such cases and we have decided to increase its presence on this stretch. Besides, we have written a letter to public works department and district collectorate to repair the road.”

Not a single plaint so far: Police

Ganesh More, inspector in-charge of Paud police station, who attended the meeting, said that the techies do not come forward to complain about such incidents. The Chande-Nande Road falls under his jurisdiction.

“We haven’t received a single complaint about robberies on this road. If we are not aware, how will we take action? We are still ready to take measures but people should come forward to lodge complaints,” he said.

He assured that night patrolling on the 9-km stretch will be enhanced.
